Safety instructions on how to approach Tarot

November 24, 2013 by Anna

We have all heard it.

“Tarot is the work of the devil” .

Personally I find the statement ridiculous and I don’t usually give it a second thought.

Recently though, someone told me to be careful with Tarot, as it was a gateway to dangerous energies.

Again, I have been on the Tarot path for 25 years and my experience with it has been very positive, but the warning made me think.

Tarot is in my opinion a tool that can be, and it is, used in many different ways. Some are safer and healthier than others, again, in my opinion.

A reading can help us focus on the situation at hand and get a more objective perspective of it. We can identify patterns in our lives, cause and effect. We can get a glimpse of where we are heading. It can help us find creative solutions. Working with Tarot will in time improve our intuition.

Let’s look for a moment at less healing ways to use Tarot.
To spy in someone’s life.
To avoid taking responsibility for our lives by
A) Asking the reader, or the Tarot, to make decisions for us.
B) Escaping the present by concentrating on the future.

Those are obvious ill ways to use Tarot.
There are some equally unhealthy but much more subtle and dangerous ways to approach Tarot.

In my experience Tarot is a tool to access intuition and information that is out there. To tap into it, I believe, I need to access the energy of the person I am reading for. Some people are more familiar than others with the concept of energy.
I think that we all communicate with each other at an energetic level. Some are just more in tune with it than others.
Let’s just say that we have something like a shield around us that is vibrant and reflects how we feel. You know when someone steps too close to you and you automatically want to step back? Well, that person has just stepped in your personal space, is making contact with your energy and you do not like it. I believe energy is real and so we should be aware of it. Fear, anger, hate, grief are heavy energy and they drain you. Love , kindness and creativity fuel and boost your energy level.
Once you understand that, you will ( hopefully) try harder to spread only good energy around you. In other words, when someone or something makes you angry you will not dump your anger on the next poor soul that comes across.

Let’s go back to Tarot.
If we are indeed working with energy, we may want to make sure to approach a reading from a calm and balanced state of mind.
If you are scared , depressed or angry do not attempt to read the cards. You will likely access fears instead of facts. If you are drank or under the influence of drugs, stay away from the cards or any other oracle tool.
If you are learning Tarot and while reading for yourself come across some of the scarier cards, do not panic. The Death card, the Tower are not always signs of gloom and doom.
Try to find kindred spirits, people who share your enthusiasm for the cards to bounce ideas with, and help you keep perspective when you need help.
Last, but not least, pace yourself. Do not try to learn everything at once. Keep your other interests well alive, stay in your body, exercise, mingle.
In other words, do not isolate yourself too much. Too many Tarot readers experience burn out. Moderation is always healthy.

The Devil card used here is from the Ancestral Path Tarot deck by Julie Cuccia- Watts.

Moon, Wheel of fortune reversed and 9 of cups.

May 2, 2013 by Anna

The following is a 3 cards spread. I do not remember who created it.

Position 1) My own energy (physical, mental, emotional, focus).

Position 2) The energy around me (people, situations I will be dealing with.)

Position 3) Advice.

The Moon is a Major Arcana, number 18 . (1+8) = 9. The element is water.

Today I will likely be a bit moody, as I reflect on the sudden unexpected changes going on around me.

Those surprises may come in the form of things that do not go the way I, or someone I care for, was hoping and/ or expecting.

Both the Moon and the Wheel have a connection to time. So, my sense of timing could be off.
Or
Today’s events could be a reminder of how fate and timing have a way to mess up even the best plans.

The advice with the 9 of cups could be to enjoy the moment. Live in the present as there are no guaranties where the future is concerned.

The energy of nine comes up twice and both times in the element of water.

Nine are about approaching the end of a cycle or of an experience. It is a time to finish what we started, integrate it and then let it go.
Water is about feelings, dreams, intuition, reflection, going with the flow.

Reading reversals is relatively new to me.
Had the Wheel been up right, I would have said to jump at an opportunity, which would turn out to be exactly what I need or want. The jumping part, would be the new and  unusual response to the Moon. As I am a Virgo and I tend to plan everything and avoid leaps of faith. The fact that both the Moon and the 9 of cups are water, makes me think that all the reflection and pondering may get the earth of the wheel stuck.

To sum it up. My interpretation with the Wheel up right, would be to let go of doubts and  fantasies and seize the sudden opportunity that will turn out to be just what I want and need.

With the Wheel reversed I feel the Moon becomes more dangerous. Perception may be off and mistakes done easily. How do I reconcile than the advice of the 9 of cups? Which to me is like a green light?

So many ways to interpret the cards! I am confused.

I have a feeling that I am missing something that is staring me straight in the face. Would you interpret the cards differently? I invite you to share your own ideas in the comments below.

Thank you.

Anna

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

I have decided to write a short follow up to the reading above, which I did yesterday.

It turns out the Tarot reading was not about my day after all. It was about the book I started reading immediately after. I love books and I am a very fast reader. Anyway, at the end of the day I could see the similarities between the Tarot reading and the novel I was reading. Today I finished it and the ending confirmed my suspicion.  “The underside of joy” tells the fictional story of a woman that goes from bliss to despair in the blink of an eye. Her husband dies when a wave hits him while he is taking pictures. I know, it sounds more like a Tower moment, but the way she deals with everything that follows, and it is a lot,  it is consistent with the wheel. She goes through the Moon energy with despair, nightmares, fears, but she manages to grab control of the Wheel more than once. She has inspirational ideas. She acts on them at  amazing speed and in the end it all works out. She gets her 9 of cups, her wish is granted, two actually. Why did the cards speak about the story I was about to read? Because the spread was for the day and I ended up reading for a good chunk of it. Also, I love books and I can get totally sucked into a good story or a good movie.  Have I learned anything from this? Yes, a few things. There was more than one correct interpretation for the Wheel in this reading. 1) The effect of fate. The husband was at the wrong place at the wrong time. Her life and the life of his children were changed forever in an instant. 2) I often say that the Wheel can be like a tornado or being caught in the undertow. There is no point fighting it, it is too strong. Wait it out. Once it is over, look around and do the best you can . 3) When reading the cards it helps to start with a clear question and yet sometimes Tarot likes to color outside the picture.

Pondering over the cards

December 3, 2009 by Anna

I have a deep love for Tarot cards and I spend a lot of time thinking about them.

I do readings for my-self and for my clients. I teach Tarot.  I read books on Tarot and lately I spend a lot of time on Blogs of other Tarot readers.

I feel lucky that so many great readers/ writers and teachers in the field of Tarot share their knowledge so generously.

I am learning so much and so can you, if you like. I have listed many great web sites and blogs on my resources category. I hope you check them out.

Here I am going to write my own reflections on the cards. It is my small way to keep the positive energies flowing.
